Wat opvalt is hoe vaak vandaag in publieke en private conversaties het ultieme argument tegen iets of iemand wordt dat de persoon of het ding in kwestie saai is, vervelend, boring.
En omgekeerd: de vreemdste mensen, voorwerpen en activiteiten krijgen respect toebedeeld, enkel en alleen omdat ze alleszins voor wat opwinding of entertainment zorgen.
Is dat altijd zo geweest? Is dat nieuw? Heeft het iets te maken met de waanzinnig grote rol die televisie in onze levens speelt? Of zoals Rob Dreher het formuleert:
By its very nature, television technology teaches us to experience the world as a series of fragmentary images. It trains us to prize emotion and stimulation over logic and abstract thought. We are conditioned to expect quick resolutions to problems, and to develop evanescently short attention spans. We expect the world to be entertaining if it is to hold our attention; eventually we learn to judge the world by essentially aesthetic criteria. For the man who gets his metaphysics from televison, boredom is the root of all evil.
