Niet dat Adam Smith (prentje) iets tegen grote landen had, getuige deze brief vanuit Frankrijk, aan zijn Schotse uitgever. Maar om er nu te gaan wonen, zoals zijn vriend David Hume lichthoofdig overwoog, neen:
"Tho I am very happy here, I long passionately to rejoin my old friends, and if I had once got fairly on your side of the water, I think I should never cross it again. Recommend the same sober way of thinking to Hume. He is light-headed, tell him, when he talks of coming to spend the remainder of his days in France. Remember me to him most affectionately."

Uiteindelijk heeft lichtvoetige Jane, tot genoegen van ons allen, toch ook wel de andere kant van het kanaal gekozen om zich in haar zeteltje te nestelen. Hume was zijn tijd ver vooruit, zoveel is zeker.
